Medical Alert Assistance Dogs

Medical Alert Assistance Dogs can detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour which is triggered by their medical condition and alert them to an impending medical event, helping them manage complex life-threatening or life-limiting medical conditions and improve confidence and independence.  We may be able to help if you have:

  • A chronic medical condition that has frequent acute or sudden episodes with little or no signs of warning that can be either prevented or its severity reduced by knowing it is about to happen
  • These episodes occur frequently
  • If left untreated these episodes may result in injury, an ambulance call or admission to hospital or be life-threatening
  • Have tried and are compliant with all the current management strategies available within the NHS.

What medical conditions do we train for?

We have discovered that dogs can help us with many medical conditions and diseases. As we gain more knowledge and experience, we believe that there may be body odour changes that a dog can smell for many different conditions that can cause an emergency or acute episode.

To date we have trained dogs to assist with medical conditions such as:

  • PoTS and other cardiac arrythmia’s
  • Addison’s disease and other types of adrenal insufficiency
  • MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome)
  • Non-epileptic seizures
  • Low blood glucose levels
  • Severe allergies

The welfare of our dogs is of paramount importance to us; whilst they are training and working, but also when they are retired or withdrawn.  Dogs that are ending their career with Medical Detection Dogs make wonderful pets, and we take care to ensure their individual needs are met when finding them a new home. Urinary Tract Infection

A UK project is training dogs to detect UTIs by scent, offering faster, non-invasive diagnosis—especially beneficial for elderly and vulnerable patients. Backed by strong research, dogs show over 90% accuracy in identifying UTI-related bacteria. Following a successful pilot, the program will expand, aiming to support NHS efforts and improve wellbeing through community-based detection and assistance services.
